Ahead of the Euro 2016 football tournament, The France government has released an app that will help citizens get instant information on terror attacks in the country. The app is simple and will alert the geo-located users in case of a suspected terror attack. The government told the BBC that the app was developed after the Paris Attacks that took place in November last year, where 130 people lost their lives.

The Interior Ministry app, called SAIP, flashes a warning on a user's mobile phone screen if there is an attack close to their location or suspicion of an imminent strike. Users can also request alerts for up to eight geographic areas, including individual districts in the capital.

"'Things are getting better?' The creation of #SAIP leaves you thinking that, at least in terms of security, it's not really the case," said one Twitter user, referring to President Francois Hollande's mantra that life for the French is improving. "Not very reassuring, but it is useful," said another Twitter user.

Earlier this week, the French intelligence agencies and the United States had sent out an alert, warning that stadiums, fan zones and transport hubs are possible targets for attacks during the football tournament. Using the new app, users will be able to sign up to receive alerts in up to eight different geo-location zones in addition to their present location. The alerts will bring in brief descriptions of what has happened and advice on how they can stay safe.

According to the Metro UK, the app is also designed not to vibrate or send out any audible alerts when there are notifications from it. This has been done so that if a user gets an alert and is present in the attack zone, it would not alert the attackers about it. The app also stresses on user’s privacy protection.

The latest version of the app also offers emergency details, apart from floods, industrial attacks and a few others. The app is available for iOS and Android.

With burgeoning online platforms, the number of online accounts have increased significantly.

All Internet users have hundreds of online accounts for countless activities; from ordering food to paying your electricity bill, everything is now accessible virtually. However, with burgeoning online platforms, the number of online accounts have increased significantly. But with the introductions of password saving feature on browsers, users can relax a bit.

Almost all current web browsers such as Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome offer a choice to store your password automatically. While you can choose not to, the feature is a great one for users who tend to use complex passwords involving numerous combinations—words, numbers, and symbols.

Often, users who do not save their passwords on the browser have to deal with certain ordeals after they forgot any passwords, however, people who keep their passwords saved have an option to view it whenever they want. This will definitely help users stay a little less care-free in this virtually connected world.

A video by Softpedia shows the exact steps required to view your saved passwords on either Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome. Other than that, the it also showcases two third-party short-cut apps for recovering saved browser passwords.

Smart home gadgets need to live together

Home devices combine machine learning, online search, voice recognition and more to allow people to get answers to questions.

United States: Smart home technology that has long been knocking at doors will settle into the mainstream after rival gadgets and services become hassle-free guests that get along with one another, industry insiders say.

While smart home offerings have been around for years, attention has been heightened by Google, Amazon and Apple maneuvering to be at the heart of managing devices capable of wirelessly taking commands or feeding information.

"We need to look at problems in the home from a holistic perspective and realize it is the value of all these devices working together that will drive adoption of the smart home," EVRYTHNG senior vice president of connected products Curt Schacker said.

He was speaking in Silicon Valley on Tuesday for the start of a 20th anniversary Connections conference devoted to smart homes and the fast-growing Internet of Things.

EVRYTHNG works with businesses to manage data gathered from just about any object given a "real-time digital identity" by using computer chips, sensors or even scannable codes.

"We think every single thing in the world can benefit from a digital identity," Schacker said.

Last week, Google unveiled a virtual home assistant device that will challenge Amazon Echo as the Internet giant laid out a future rich with artificial intelligence.

Google Home, about the size of a stout vase, will hit the market later this year, vice president of product management Mario Queiroz promised at the Internet giant's annual developers conference.

Home devices will incorporate new Google virtual assistant software introduced by chief executive Sundar Pichai.

"Our ability to do conversational understanding is far ahead of what other virtual assistants can do," Pichai told a packed audience.

"We are an order of magnitude ahead of everyone else."

Home devices combine machine learning, online search, voice recognition and more to allow people to get answers to questions, manage tasks or control devices by speaking naturally, demonstrations showed.

When Home hits, it will challenge Amazon Echo voice-controlled assistants that have proven to be a hit since the Seattle-based online retail colossus unveiled them two years ago.

Echo models are infused with Alexa virtual assistant software that can be built into anything "from a lawn sprinkler to a ceiling fan," Amazon Echo chief evangelist David Isbitski said at Connections.

"We started thinking about Echo and Alexa and it was hard for us to imagine in a couple of years any kind of interaction with technology will not be voice driven," Isbitski said.

"It is easy to see that voice will be everywhere."

He envisioned an era of "ambient computing" in which, as depicted in science fiction, people speak commands and machines respond and obey with the help of artificial intelligence.

"The Internet of Things enables these smart home scenarios we have been talking about for years," Isbitski said.

A section at Amazon's online retail website is devoted to smart devices that work with Alexa, an open network that invites developers to teach the software new skills.

Amazon last year established a $100 million Alexa Fund to provide venture capital for innovators working with the technology.

"We are crawling; we are going to be walking pretty quick and we are all looking forward to running toward that smart home that we have always envisioned," Isbitski said.

Meanwhile, Apple has been wooing developers with a HomeKit framework for using the technology giant's devices and Siri virtual assistant to manage smart appliances, fixtures and more.

Apple is believed to have HomeKit news planned at a press event taking place in San Francisco in June.

Speakers at Connections were skeptical that one smart home device would rule them all, given the array of service providers and gadget makers along with the fact that the web of smart things is growing to include cars.

Mark Skarpness chairs IoTivity, a project aimed at establishing standards that would let the gamut of smart devices work together.

"I think the market will get much bigger if you are not spending all your time competing on connectivity and instead competing on what we can do for you," he said.

Facebook changes policies on 'Trending Topics' after criticism
Dienstag, 24. Mai 2016

The company said an internal probe showed no evidence of political bias in the selection of news stories for Trending Topics.
Facebook said that it has changed some of the procedures for deciding its ‘Trending Topics’ section.
Facebook said that it has changed some of the procedures for deciding its ‘Trending Topics’ section.

Facebook said on Monday that it had changed some of the procedures for its ‘Trending Topics’ section after a news report alleging it suppressed conservative news prompted a US Congressional demand for more transparency.

The company said an internal probe showed no evidence of political bias in the selection of news stories for Trending Topics, a feature that is separate from the main ‘news feed’ where most Facebook users get their news.

But the world's largest social network said in a blogpost that it was introducing several changes, including elimination of a top-ten list of approved websites, more training and clearer guidelines to help human editors avoid ideological or political  bias, and more robust review procedures. Earlier this month, a former Facebook contractor had accused the company's editors of deliberately suppressing conservative news. The allegations were reported by technology news website Gizmodo, which did not identify the ex-contractor.

The report led Republican Sen. John Thune to write a letter demanding that the company explain how it selects news articles for its Trending Topics list.

Two days after Thune's letter, Facebook published a lengthy blogpost detailing how Trending Topics works even though it rarely discloses such practices. Previously, it had never discussed the inner workings of the feature, which displays topics and news articles in the top right hand corner of the desktop homepage for its more than 1.6 billion users.

Facebook said its investigation showed that conservative and liberal topics were approved as trending topics at nearly identical rates. It said it was unable to substantiate any allegations of politically motivated suppression of particular subjects or sources.

But it did not rule out human error in selecting topics.

"Our investigation could not fully exclude the possibility of isolated improper actions or unintentional bias in the implementation of our guidelines or policies," Colin Stretch, Facebook's General Counsel, wrote in a company blogpost.

Facebook Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg met last week with more than a dozen conservative politicians and media personalities to discuss issues of trust in the social network.

In his letter, Thune had called on Facebook to respond to the criticism and sought answers by May 24 to several questions about its internal practices.

"Any attempt by a neutral and inclusive social media platform to censor or manipulate political discussion is an abuse of trust and inconsistent with the values of an open internet," Thune said.
