MONUMENTS AND PLACES
Toli Masjid

Caravan, a suburb south-east of Golconda fort, was planned in the Qutb Shahi times. The kings and their retinue passed through Caravan while going to Hyderabad from Golconda Fort. To the right of the main road, stands Toli Masjid, a truly magnificent monument of the Qutb Shahi period. It is one of the finest examples of Qutb Shahi architecture.

Built in 1671, in the reign of Sultan Abdullah, the Masjid is divided into two halls, the outer one having five arched openings and the inner one three. Two minarets of 20 metres each, flank the edifice. The parapets on top comprise a series of miniature arches with perforated screens of different designs. The inscription in the prayer niche tells us that Musa Khan built the mosque. The Musa Burj (bastion) of the Golconda fort is also the work of Musa Khan who was the chamberlain of Abdullah Qutb Shah.

The author of the “Gulzar-e-Asafia” or “royal records” writes that when this royal architect was building Mecca Masjid, he was allowed one Damn (Damdi Telugu) out of every rupee spent on it. The sum of money thus collected was used by Musa Khan to construct the Toli Masjid. Hence, the royal records also called it Damn Masjid. Incidentally, Musa Khan played an important role in the accession of the last king Abul Hasan to the throne of Golconda
