Wajd was a talented Urdu poet. He had equal proficiency in composing gazals and poems. He was broad-minded and progressive. Sikander Au Wajd was born on 22nd January, 1914, at Bijapur in Aurangabad District. After passing Matric and Intermediate from Aurangabad College, he took admission in the Osmania University.

In 1935, he graduated and was selected for Hyderabad Civil Service. Later he was appointed as Munsif Magistrate in Judicial Service. After the trifurcation of the State of Hyderabad he was allotted to Maharashtra State. At the time of his retirement, he was a sessions judge. He devoted himself to literary and poetical activities on his retirement. He was President of the Anjuman-e-Taraqqi-e-Urdu, Maharashtra and was awarded Padma Bhushan for his literary services.

In 1972, he was elected to the Rajya Sabha from Maharashtra State. He enjoyed access to the Nehru family. Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru released Wajd’s third collection “Awarq-e-Mussavar”. Prior to this collection his other poetical works “Laho-Tarung”, “Aftab-e-Taza” and “Bayaz-e-Maryam” were published in 1944, 1952 and 1974 respectively. Wajd had an immaculate personality and character. In addition to this, providence had gifted him with a melodious voice, and wherever he recited his gazals and poems, the audience listened to him in rapt attention. He died on 16th June, 1983 at Aurangabad.
