Description
We keep complaining about bad governance and the problems we face. We don’t seem to realize an important part of that solution lies in our hands – Our Vote.
It is pathetic that only about 42% of the registered voters participated in the last municipal elections in Hyderabad. We have several problems including – bad roads, water availability and quality, erratic power supply and cost, drainage and trash/garbage collection, corruption to name a few main ones. We need to have a say and need to get involved. We need to make sure that we elect the right people who can earnestly work towards solutions for these problems and support them in their efforts.
An even more scary statistic is that there a lot of eligible youth who are not yet registered to vote. Voter Id is not just an Id for getting a SIM card. It is the power to decide who leads and governs us and our destiny. We need to make sure that all eligible people are registered and actively participate in the electoral process to help fix politics. It is not going to be easy but if we work diligently and consistently we should start to see results in the future.
Youth seem pretty indifferent or ignorant about registering to vote. In Andhra Pradesh, around 38 lakh people, aged between 18 and 19 years, have not enrolled their names in the voter list. Only 14 lakh people in the age group of 18-19 have enrolled as voters.
Hyderabad has a lot of colleges and corporate companies which provide good avenues for the advancement to a large number of youth. We look forward to them to get involved and make a positive difference for all of us.
Voter registration and changes can now be done online pretty easily. Hello Hyderabad along with several NGOs is creating awareness and promoting voter registration especially among the youth.
